Port Tampa Bay hopes to benefit from expanded Panama Canal

TAMPA — When behemoth container ships start sailing through the widened Panama Canal later this year, they will not come to Port Tampa Bay. But with more cargo expected to come to the eastern United States by sea, the port is betting that it can stake a claim to some of the new cargo traffic flowing through the canal. Bigger ships might come to Tampa even if the biggest ones don't.

The global food company may have chosen the country to set up a purchasing center in order to meet demand from the entire Latin American region. According Anpanama.com review, the minister Augusto Arosemena announced that the food company Nestle has opened a regional purchasing center in Panama. In the article Arosemena said that "... 'They (Nestle) currently have two regional centers of this kind, one in Switzerland and one in Malaysia. And now they have invested in Panama in order to handle all of their purchases at the regional level '... the aim is to serve the Latin American market.

VerDi Import received the first five containers of Quetzali melons. "We hope to speak to a new group by offering Panama melons early. Customers who can no longer deal with the Brazilian quality and who are tired of the (old) stocks. With a brix of 12-13 we are convinced we will certainly get new customers," the importer continues.
