Panama, August 16, 2018. The American Chamber of Commerce’s Energy Committee met in a roundtable lunch with US Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy, Steve Winberg, in order to talk about Panama’s energy sector.
During the meeting, members of the energy committee and Winberg expressed their views on the diversification of Panama’s power grid, the integration of Colombia to the Central American Electrical Interconnection System (SIEPAC) and the benefits arising from the commissioning of U.S. company AES’s new liquefied natural gas plant in Colon.
Winberg will sign a Memorandum of Understanding on energy cooperation and infrastructure investment between the United States and Panama. This agreement reinforces the United States’ support for Panama as a natural gas hub.
Winberg will also attend the opening of the AES natural gas power plant in Colon, which will take place on August 17. This energy project represents a $1.5 billion dollar US private investment in Panama.
