Panama City, Panama, December 14, 2012—The American Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Panama (AMCHAM) announced today the launch of its second annual English Scholarship Program in collaboration with the United States Embassy of Panama. The program offers 60 scholarships to employees of AMCHAM member companies and to qualified students in need.  Each scholarship pays for the cost of English classes offered by the Center for English Language Immersion (CELI), an organization that resulted from the public-private partnership of the Embassy of the United States in Panama and the Universidad Latina of Panama.

Luis Laguerre, President of AMCHAM, applauded the program, saying that, “AMCHAM, as an agent for positive change, will offer scholarships to study English for the second consecutive year so that our member companies can meet the goal of creating sustainable sources of bilingual talent in the local economy. We want the benefits of the country’s strong economy to reach as many Panamanians as possible.”

The new director of CELI, Axela Zelaya de Corro, said, “As Panamanians, we are grateful for programs that help meet the ongoing demand for a bilingual workforce such as AMCHAM’s English Scholarship Program. Panama is a country with a strong service industry sector that needs bilingual employees as companies expand internationally.  We envision that many Panamanians will benefit both professionally and financially through such employment opportunities.”
