Export & Strategic Sectors
Panama exported about $843.9 million in 2013, an increase of 2.7% compared to the previous year. This is the highest figure in the last five years, according to the General Comptroller's Office.
Main exports products from Panama come from the Agricultural Sector, such as bananas (4.5%), shrimp (84.4%), pineapple (18.9%), watermelons and Gourmet Coffee.
Panama's main trade partner is The United States of America with the 28% of our total exports.
Europe represented 60% of the non-traditional agro exports of Panama.
As an important fact to develop more agricultural exports from Panama, the country has 3.4 million hectares destined to agricultural activities, of which 1.5 million are arable farming.
Export Incentive Laws
The Trade Promotion Agreement between The United States of America and Panama has set a new commercial phase. Increasing the ease of doing business between these countries.
As for Panama, the government has enacted the "Export Processing Zones" governed pursuant to Law No. 32* of April 5 of 2011, establishing a Special Regime, Integral and Simplified for the Establishment and Operation of Free Zones.
The Export Processing Zones law establishes several incentives, such as Fiscal, Migratory and Labor.
The permitted activities within the Export Processing Zones are:
- Manufacturing
- Assembly
- Processing
