The Capital Link New York Maritime Forum this week was notable not only for its discussions on the market but also because it facilitated a recognition of New York’s shipping “cluster” by the political establishment. For the first time, after years of efforts to start this dialogue, the commercial shipping eco-system - with a huge concentration of people and capital in New York - was brought together with top officials from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), the City of New York, and New York State.
Expansion of the Panama Canal Generates 80 Million Dollars Profits

The Panama Canal has so far gained 80 million dollars due to the its expansion allowing the transit of 165 large vessels, according to Jorge Luis Quijano, administrator of the Panama Canal Authority (ACP, in Spanish). Since the opening of the new Panama locks, the Suez Canal, administered by Egypt, began a competition and 65 percent of their tariffs went down, but ‘we will not enter into a price war,’ Quijano told reporters. The Suez Canal discounts meant that many ships visiting the East Coast of the United States, instead of returning to the west coast by Panama, do so through the Egyptian route, representing a loss of about $ 600,000 each time, he revealed..

In the first six months of this year, nearly 50 Bcf of U.S. LNG was exported. We will be surging to a dominant role in less than five years, with five terminals operating on the Gulf Coast and in Maryland by 2020. U.S. LNG has already been shipped to the Middle East, Europe, South America, Asia.
The $5.5 Panama Canal expansion completed in June will give U.S. LNG shippers a faster and cheaper route to key importers in Asia and Latin America, the latter having taken nearly 60% of U.S. LNG exported thus far. “The Panama Canal Authority has introduced new toll structures for LNG vessels designed to encourage additional LNG traffic through the Canal, especially for round trips.” And football-field-size tankers can now pass through the shortcut, which allows for over 90% of the global LNG fleet to now pass through, compared to 6% before. EIA says 550 tankers of U.S. LNG a year could be passing through the Panama Canal by the early-2020s.

The pineapple market is in turmoil. Due to a much lower production in Costa Rica, prices in Europe and the United States have gone through the roof. In all these markets, sharply higher prices have been reported. In some cases, they have even doubled. Nevertheless, the market remains good.
In the months of August and September, when Costa Rica has its lowest production, that of Panama reaches its peak. Panamanian growers consequently benefit from the high prices on the European market due to the shortage of Costa Rican pineapples. One grower says he is assured of having positive prospects for the season, because the prices are good and the markets in Europe and the US are insatiable. Furthermore, the sector is looking for new markets, including Canada, South Korea and Japan.

The Main Navigation Channel Deepening Program creates a safe and economically efficient pathway for the newest generation of containerships calling the Port of New York and New Jersey, the port said.
Gobierno prevé nueva ampliación del Canal de Panamá

A partir de octubre de este año, el departamento de ingeniería del Canal de Panamá iniciará formalmente una serie de estudios para lo que sería la próxima ampliación de la vía interoceánica así lo dio a conocer el administrador Jorge Luis Quijano. “Empezamos este octubre, ya tenemos un equipo pequeño que se ha conformado para hacer estudios, eso es algo constante en el Canal de Panamá ver opciones y alternativas para ampliar la capacidad, simplemente que los esfuerzos los habíamos concentrado en culminar y poner a operar el tercer juego de esclusas” afirmó este jueves Quijano. Este anuncio se da a poco más de cien días de inaugurado el proyecto del tercer juego de esclusas del Canal de Panamá que se dio 102 años después de la apertura inicial de la vía acuática construida por Estados Unidos, pero en manos panameñas a partir del año 2000.

The Panama Canal’s expanded locks, which provide container lines with a new route for ships carrying up to 13,000 20-foot-equivalent units, also have opened a new path for roll-on, roll-off carriers that measure capacity not in TEUs but in CEUs, or car equivalent units. Vehicle carriers factored the canal expansion into their orders for their latest generation of roll-on, roll-off car and truck carriers. More than two dozen pure car and truck carriers now have beams exceeding the 106-foot (32-meter) maximum of the canal’s older locks.
