With the multibillion-dollar expansion of the Panama Canal slated to wrap up in June, the country has a chance to find new economic steam despite the fallout of the Panama Papers. An extremely favorable tax regime, combined with strict bank secrecy, has long since made Panama a popular offshore financial center, with banks, insurers and financial services providers from around the globe filling up the skyscrapers that have mushroomed around the sail-shaped Trump Tower in Panama City.

Panama switches on 215-MW wind park

Panama's president Juan Carlos Varela inaugurated on Wednesday the 215-MW Laudato Si wind farm, located in the city of Penonome. Local firm UEP Penonome II SA, a subsidiary of power generation company InterEnergy Holdings, was the company responsible for the project. Its total cost is estimated at about USD 430 million.
Puerto Panameño alcanza cifra histórica

El puerto de Balboa, administrado por Panama Ports Company, rompió un récord de carga con 10.546 movimientos, cifra histórica no solo para el país, sino toda América Latina. El Maersk Essex, barco con un tonelaje bruto de 141.716, comenzó operaciones a las 10:33 a.m. del 25 de marzo y terminó a las 11:18 a.m. del 27 del mismo mes, trabajando con 8 grúas Súper Post-Panamax en el muelle 18 de Balboa. El zarpe tenía la dificultad de estar condicionado a los tránsitos que agenda la Autoridad del Canal de Panamá, reduciendo el tiempo de operación a tan solo 40 horas para salir oportunamente y no quedar atrapado entre maniobras hasta el día siguiente.

La feria Intermodal South America 2016, la más grande e importante del comercio exterior en la región fue el sitial para que Panamá expusiera sus servicios logísticos. El evento, que fue realizado del 5 al 7 de abril en Brasil ofreció una amplia vitrina para la promoción multimodal de empresas operadoras de transporte y carga. ‘Todo contacto o negocio que se logre concretar con importadores o exportadores de otros países, necesariamente beneficiará las exportaciones de servicios de Panamá con distintos socios comerciales', dijo Ángelo Gutierrez, director general de Zonas Francas del Ministerio de Comercio e Industrias.
