U.S. Customs and Border Protection Launches “The Truth Behind Counterfeits” Campaign to Inform Travelers of the Dangers of Counterfeit Goods

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) launched the “The Truth Behind Counterfeits” campaign today to raise awareness of the dangers and negative impacts of purchasing counterfeit goods. The Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) initiative is an educational awareness campaign for international travelers, designed to call attention to the growing impacts of purchasing counterfeit goods, including the loss of American jobs and the support of criminal activity. Last year CBP seized more than $1.3 billion in counterfeit goods.
“CBP is committed to protecting consumers and enforcing U.S. trade laws, and this campaign will help raise awareness and educate the traveling public about the dangers of purchasing counterfeit goods,” said Brenda Smith, Executive Assistant Commissioner for the Office of Trade. “Not only do counterfeits damage the American economy, such goods can threaten the health and safety of consumers.”

Con el objetivo de propiciar la integración y el desarrollo empresarial en el interior del país, la Cámara de Comercio, Industrias y Agricultura de Chiriquí (CAMCHI) anunció la celebración de la quinta versión de la Rueda de Negocios (RDN) Chiriquí, que en esta ocasión se efectuará del 23 al 25 de agosto del presente año.
En este evento -en el que se prevé generar transacciones a corto, mediano y largo plazo superiores a los quince millones de balboas- se darán cita empresarios y compradores de diversos sectores como agroindustria, tecnología, supermercados, bancos, seguros, bienes raíces, servicios, turismo, industria y comercio en general, así lo indicaron los organizadores.
Durante el acto de lanzamiento efectuado en la sede de la Cámara de Comercio, Industrias y Agricultura de Panamá en ciudad capital, el viceministro de Comercio Exterior del MICI, Néstor González, resaltó el crecimiento sostenido que desde su primera versión ha registrado la RDN en el intercambio comercial que genera, al igual que la eficacia organizativa con la que se desarrollan las sesiones comerciales..
Lanzan marca país para inversión y turismo “Panamá: La Gran Conexión”

El Ministerio de Comercio e Industrias (MICI) lanzó la marca país como destino para inversionistas y turistas bajo la campaña “Panamá: La Gran Conexión”, siendo el Aeropuerto Internacional de Tocumen, el sitio elegido para el establecimiento del centro de información interactivo que expone las ventajas competitivas que ofrece Panamá y que nos hace únicos en la región.
La campaña es resultado de un arduo trabajo de la Agencia para la Promoción de las Inversiones y Exportaciones (Proinvex) del MICI, con los aportes de la Autoridad de Turismo de Panamá (ATP), Samsung, empresa líder en tecnología, y Tocumen, a fin de consolidar las ventajas únicas que radican de nuestra posición geográfica y conectividad, que nos ubica como el hub comercial por excelencia de América Latina en servicios, centro financiero, capacidad logística y centro de distribución de clase mundial.
Asimismo, en materia turística la nueva campaña posiciona el destino de Panamá en el marco internacional como único para viajeros que buscan un nuevo tipo de experiencia. En el caso de Panamá, el país se diferencia promocionando las bondades diferentes de nuestra cultura, nuestros paisajes, y la aventura que ofrece el interior del istmo, convirtiéndonos en un lugar diferente e inolvidable.
Panama recognizes China and breaks diplomatic ties with Taiwan

In an announcement on Monday, Panama's government said it recognized there was "only one China in the world" and that Taiwan was an inalienable part of Chinese territory.
"The Panamanian government is today breaking its 'diplomatic ties' with Taiwan, and pledges to end all relations or official contact with Taiwan," according to the statement. The decision reduces to 20 the number of countries that recognize Taiwan rather than Beijing as representing China.
Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela said in a televised address that it was the "correct path for our country."
"We have taken a historic step," Varela remarked. "Both countries opt for the connection of a world that is more and more integrated, which creates a new era of opportunities for a relationship that we are starting today."
Southern Ports Break Records as Panama Canal Anniversary Nears

Southern ports are experiencing a record foreign trade boom thanks in part to an expanded Panama Canal that permits Asian cargo ships to reach them more easily.
Georgia Ports Authority and the Port of Virginia, which include the nation’s fourth and fifth largest ranked by volume, respectively, each moved the most cargo they have ever handled in May. The two ports posted more than 10 percent year-over-year volume growth for the month.
They aren’t alone. South Carolina Ports Authority, which includes Charleston, had its best ever month in March and overall volume from last July through May is up 9.4 percent compared to the previous July to May period.
"We’ve candidly been surprised by the strength of the volume growth for the first part of this calendar year. January through April has been very strong," said Jim Newsome, president and chief executive office of South Carolina Ports Authority, in a telephone interview.
